The
high standards of safety are assured by, among other things, SIPS (Side Impact Protection System) and two world
firsts – IC (Inflatable Curtain) which protects the head in side collisions,
and WHIPS, a whiplash protection system integrated in the front seats.
Built-in protection
against whiplash injuries WHIPS
(Whiplash Protection System) is Volvo’s own system for reducing the stresses
on the spine and neck in this common type of collision. WHIPS is integrated
in the front seats and is activated by a sufficiently severe rear impact. The entire backrest moves backwards with the occupant to reduce the strain on the spine and neck. Once their entire spine is safely against the backrest, it tilts backwards to reduce the forces which normally throw the head forwards causing injury.
Theft- proof lock system
The remote control alarm system has sensors in the doors, bonnet and boot lid.
for extra protection, it also has sensors that reacts to movement inside the car or if a window is broken. You can also add a sensor that
triggers the alarm if the car is lifted from the ground - if, for example, somebody tries to steel the wheels or tow the car away.

At the touch of a button, the driver can fold down the head restraints on the outer rear seats, for
the best rear vision. They fold forwards to ensure that rear-seat passengers will remember to fold them up when they get into the car.
If you need extra luggage space, simply fold down the rear seat-all of it or just part of it. You can also fold down the front
passenger seat backrest. Long items are easy to load through the hatch in the centre armrest.

Unique
side-impact protection
Of all severe car accidents, 25% involve side impacts. The Volvo S80 has Volvo’s
unique system for side-impact protection – SIPS.
SIPS dissipates a large part of the force of a collision that would otherwise penetrate through the side of the car to beams, pillars, floor, roof and
other areas of the body. The side impact airbags protect the chest and play
an important part in SIPS. The airbags are fitted in the outer edge of the front
seat backrests, not in the door. This means that your airbag is always securely by your
side, whatever position your seat is in. 
Rear-end collisions, even at relatively low speeds, often result in back and
neck injuries. Such "whiplash" injuries often lead to lifelong suffering.
An electronic immobiliser makes it impossible to start the car without the right key. The only outside
lock cylinder is in the driver's door and is of a rotating type that makes it difficult fir a thief to break
into the car. The same type of lock cylinder is used for the ignition. And even if a thief does manage
to break in, it is impossible to open the car doors from the inside.
As you approach the car, you can use the remote controller to turn on the interior lamps, parking lamps, side marker lamps and the side
mirror lamps (optional).
Just pull the light switch when you leave the car and the headlamps, side marker lamps and the sidemirror lamps (optional)
will remain on until you are safely inside the building.
The strong, smooth five or six-cylinder engines are fuel-efficient and keep harmful emissions well within
the limits. The engines range consists of a 2.4 (140bhp), 2.4 (170bhp), 2.5D, 2.9 and the T6. Instead of striving for high peak output, we have
given priority to power in all driving situations. You have access to the full power of the engine without
pressing it - with immediate response. All the engines are transversely mounted, for generous
interior space and good balance.
